What is Fieldstone?

Fieldstone replicates the appearance of naturally gathered stone collected from fields and surface deposits, where geological processes and weathering have created irregular shapes without human processing. The manufacturing approach emphasizes randomness — pieces vary significantly in size, thickness, edge definition, and surface texture, with no two stones sharing identical dimensions. This variation means installations develop organically without repeating patterns or visible regularity, closely mimicking the look of historic mortared stone walls built using locally sourced material. The irregular shapes and varied thicknesses require experienced installation, as each stone must be positioned individually to achieve stable placement and balanced visual composition. Mortar joints vary in width depending on how pieces fit together, typically ranging from tight contacts to gaps of several inches that are filled with mortar. The substantial thickness variation (2 to 6 inches is common) means significant substrate support is required, and the material weight must be calculated into structural planning for both vertical and horizontal applications. Fieldstone works particularly well for applications where a rustic, organic appearance is desired, such as outdoor features, landscape walls, residential exteriors, and fireplace surrounds in traditional or cottage-style homes.
